CNY RISE Center Hosts 13th Annual Community Ramadan Dinner

CNY RISE Center proudly hosted its 13th Annual Community Ramadan Dinner, bringing together faith leaders, public officials, law enforcement representatives, students, and community members for an evening of reflection, dialogue, and shared humanity.

The program highlighted the deeper meaning of Ramadan — not only as a month of fasting, but as a time of transformation, patience, generosity, and compassion. Guests were reminded that fasting is not about proving strength, but about developing empathy and caring for others. In the spirit of the Prophet Muhammad’s example, the evening emphasized humility, gratitude, forgiveness, and unity.

At sunset, a Qur’an recitation and the Call to Prayer marked the traditional breaking of the fast with dates, followed by a homemade Turkish dinner prepared and served by volunteers. Muslim guests gathered for the Maghrib prayer while others enjoyed fellowship and conversation.

The evening also featured a special Sufi music performance by İlhan Özcan, a graduate of Sakarya University’s State Conservatory, whose performance created a reflective and spiritual atmosphere.

The keynote address, “The Meaning of Fasting,” was delivered by Mobin Karimi, Assistant Professor at SUNY Upstate Medical University. Dr. Karimi shared insights into the spiritual discipline of fasting and connected its lessons to resilience, service, and personal growth. Born in Afghanistan, his journey as a physician-scientist and humanitarian added depth and inspiration to the evening.

We were honored by the presence of members of the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and the Syracuse Police Department, as well as leaders from InterFaith Works of Central New York, Bethany House, Zen Center, Congregation Beth Sholom Chevra Shas, Northside Learning Center, and other community partners.

Closing reflections were offered by Chris Foles, President of InterFaith Works, and Mark Rusin, Chief of Police, underscoring the importance of unity, dialogue, and partnership in strengthening our community.

For thirteen years, this annual gathering has served as a bridge-building tradition — fostering interfaith relationships and celebrating the shared values that unite us.

CNY RISE Center extends sincere thanks to all volunteers, donors, speakers, and guests who made this meaningful evening possible.
