Celebrating 20 Years of Friendship

CNY RISE Center’s 20th Annual Friendship Dinner Celebrating Aging in CNY (Imagining an Age Friendly community)

The CNY RISE Center, in partnership with InterFaith Works, marked a significant milestone on November 12, 2025, hosting the 20th Annual Friendship Dinner at their Syracuse venue. Under the inspiring theme “We Rise by Lifting Others,” this special evening brought together community members of all ages and backgrounds to celebrate two decades of building bridges across cultures and faiths.

The event, masterfully guided by MC Dr. Lisa Saka, began with a warm reception that set the tone for an evening of meaningful connections. Tim Saka of the CNY RISE Center welcomed guests with heartfelt greetings, emphasizing the center’s enduring commitment to respect the elderly members of our community and the Islamic perspective on the topic.

A powerful multimedia presentation explored the vision of creating an age-friendly community in Central New York, featuring voices from elderly community members themselves alongside leading advocates in the field. This presentation set the stage for deeper conversations about how we can better support our aging neighbors.

The evening’s keynote address by Dr. Lori Klivak, PhD, Senior Director at the Center for Healthy Aging – InterFaith Works, challenged attendees to reimagine Central New York as a truly age-friendly community. Dr. Klivak’s presentation, “Celebrate Aging in CNY – Imagining an Age Friendly Community,” sparked important conversations about supporting our elderly neighbors, addressing isolation, and ensuring dignity in aging. She made a critical point that only 1% of the NY State budget goes to the elderly services.

This timely discussion resonated deeply with the diverse audience, from young community advocates to senior residents, all united in their commitment to creating a more inclusive Syracuse where every generation thrives. Attendees learned about existing senior care centers, volunteer-driven food banks that regularly deliver meals and essential supplies to elderly homes.

Honoring Community Champions

The evening’s highlight came with the presentation of Community Service Awards to three exceptional individuals whose dedication exemplifies the spirit of service:

– JoAnne Spoto Decker: from the Onondaga County Department of Adult & Long Term Care Services, recognized for her tireless advocacy for senior citizens

– Elisa Morales: of La Liga – Spanish Action League of Onondaga County, honored for bridging cultural divides and empowering the elderly Hispanic community

– Jerlene Harper: from Neighborhood Connections Food Bank, celebrated for ensuring no neighbor goes hungry through regular food deliveries to elderly residents

Guests savored authentic Turkish cuisine throughout the evening, with the sauce-topped chicken and traditional dessert receiving particular praise. This culinary journey reflected the CNY RISE Center’s mission of sharing cultural heritage while building community connections.

Distinguished community leaders, including Commissioner Syeisha Byrd, Zeeshan James from Sai Sewa Adult Day Care Center, and State Senator Rachel May, offered closing remarks that reinforced the evening’s message of unity and support for elderly. The discussion continued around practical steps for expanding support networks for elderly residents and ensuring no one in our community faces aging alone.

As guests departed, the overwhelming sentiment was one of joy and renewed commitment to serving our community’s most vulnerable members. The 20th Annual Friendship Dinner not only celebrated past achievements but also sparked actionable conversations about creating a Syracuse where everyone, regardless of age, faith, or background, can thrive with dignity.
